Location: Houston, TX // Prof. Douglas Oliver // Rice School of Architecture, Fall 2014 // In collaboration with Rachel Estes

On highly visible site at one end of Rice University’s Classically-planned campus, this opera house establishes itself as a prominent anchor to the campus axis. As the main attraction in the opera house, the 600-seat performance hall anchors the constant flows of movement and information between performance and education. The spaces dedicated to each purpose are split across an atrium that serves as a thoroughfare connecting the Shepherd School of Music and campus parking with the rest of Rice's campus buildings. Externally, the largely transparent façade allows clear views of the copper-clad shell that encloses the performance hall whilst the sweeping roof canopy gestures towards the unification of performance and pedagogy within one structure.
